Siegert's theorem, in which the amplitude of a one-photon process on a nucleus is expressed in terms of the generalized electric and magnetic dipole moments of the nucleus, is generalized without resorting to the traditional subdivision of the electromagnetic current of the nucleus into a convection current, associated with the motion of the nucleus as a whole, and an internal current
