Polonium: Windscale's most lethal legacy
Description
Re-examination of data published following the Windscale accident in October 1957 has revealed that polonium, which was released in the fire, was ignored in subsequent analyses of the consequences of the accident. It is estimated that some 370 curies of polonium were released equating to a dose of some 850,000 man-rems. Since NRPB consider a figure of 165 cancer deaths per million man-rems it is suggested that priority should be given to a search for signs of a rising cancer rate. (U.K.)
