Pilot plant for ceramics powder synthesis with HF plasma

Description
CEA has developed a prototype for the processing of ceramic powders in a RF plasma. The synthesis of boron has been studied involving following reaction: BCl3 + 3/2H2 → B(s) + 3HCl. The powder is a brown-black non pyrophoric blend of amorphous and β - rhomboedric boron. Purity is high but Cl element is still present after the process and must be removed by a high temperature cycle under vacuum. The morphology of the powder depends on operating conditions: particle size varies from 0.1 to 2 μm and specific surface from 50 to 5 m2/g. The yield of the reaction is close to the thermodynamic calculations. Conditions for pre-industrial operating have been defined where yield is about 65% and productivity about 100g/h during 5 to 6 hours. A final density of 2.34 g/cm3 has been achieved after a CIP-HIP compression cycle

Le CEA a developpe une installation pilote de synthese de poudres ceramiques par plasma HF. Les premiers essais ont porte sur la synthese de Bore a partir de BCl3 suivant la reaction: BCl3 + 3/2H2 → B(s) + 3HCl. Le produit obtenu est une poudre marron/noire, non pyrophorique, d'un melange de Bore amorphe et de Bore β-rhomboedrique. La purete est elevee, mais il reste du chlore apres le procede qui doit etre elimine par un traitement thermique a haute temperature sous vide. La morphologie des particules depend des conditions operatoires: la taille varie de 0,1 a 2 μm et la surface specifique de 50 a 5 m2/g. Les rendements sont proches des rendements thermodynamiques. Nous avons pu definir un point de fonctionnement pour lequel le rendement moyen est de 65% pour une productivite d'environ 100g/h pendant des periodes de production de 5 a 6 heures. Du bore de densite theorique (2,34) a ete obtenu par pressage isostatique suivant un cycle CIP-HIPAdditional details
