Description
In this new annual report of INS, the research activities and projects of the Institute for fiscal year 1994 are presented. They cover a wide field, ranging from particle physics at high energies, nuclear physics at various energy regions and of variety of approaches, atomic physics using accelerators or nuclear-physics techniques and theoretical research in particle and nuclear physics. INS has two major accelerators, the Sector Field (SF) cyclotron and the 1.3-GeV Electron Synchrotron (ES), which facilitate experiments by researchers from universities and other research institutes, both domestic and abroad. Linked to the cyclotron is the 1-GeV cooler synchrotron, TARN-II which has turned out to be a powerful tool for atomic physics. A heavy-ion linac is being constructed together with an on-line isotope separator at the SF cyclotron. From the ES, beam injection has been made regularly into the storage ring of the Institute of Solid State Physics, which is used as a synchrotron-radiation facility. Research activities are expanding to outside of the institute. The large-acceptance superconducting solenoid spectrometer (SKS) installed at the 12-GeV proton synchrotron at KEK keeps producing valuable data on hypernuclei. The collaboration at BNL to study heavy-ion collisions is extending its investigation with a gold beam. The rare K-decay collaboration at BNL has made steady progress and will soon start data-taking. The ZEUS collaboration at DESY-HERA is continuing to reveal new features concerning the structure of the both proton and photon. INS has been pushing forward very seriously its future project, the Japan Hadron Project, under the leadership of the former Director, Professor T.Yamazaki. The plan is to build a new powerful proton source which can produce high-intensity meson beams for nuclear/particle physics, high-intensity decay muons of various energies for particle/materials science and high intensity pulsed neutrons for material science.
