Study on the electrolytic reduction of Uranium-VI to Uranium-IV in a nitrate system
Description
The determination of the best conditions to prepare hydrazine stabilized uranium (IV) nitrate solutions for utilization in Purex flowsheets is dealt with. Electrolytic reduction of U(VI) has been selected as the basic method, using an open electrolytic cell with titanum and platinum electrodes. The hydrazine concentration, the current density, acidity, U(VI) concentration and reduction time were the parameters studied and U(IV)/U(VI) ratio was used to evaluate the degree of reduction. From the results it could be concluded that the technique is reliable. The U(IV) solutions remains constant for at least two weeks and can be used in the chemical processing of irradiated uranium fuels. (Author)

Estudaram-se as condicoes para a preparacao de solucoes estabilizadas de nitrato uranoso, visando a utilizacao deste reagente no tratamento de uranio irradiado, segundo o processo Purex. A tecnica baseia-se na reducao eletrolitica do uranio utilizando-se eletrodos de platina e titanio contidos numa celula de vidro aberta, provida de refrigeracao e agitacao. Mantendo-se a geometria fixa, estudaram-se os seguintes parametros: concentracao de hidrazina, densidade de corrente, acidez das solucoes, concentracao de uranio-VI, temperatura e tempo de reducao. Fez-se avaliacao dos resultados mediante a determinacao da razao U-IV/U-VI. Os resultados indicaram que a tecnica mostra-se eficiente, obtendo-se solucoes estaveis em tempos relativamente curtos, condicoes indispensaveis para a utilizacao na instalacao de tratamento de materiais irradiados do Centro de Engenharia Quimica do Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares - Sao Paulo.
