Device for resonance neutron detection

Description

The device is intended for determining a content of elements exhibiting a property of resonance absorption of neutrons in rocks. It comprises an activation neutron detector and a shield protecting the latter from activation by thermal and scattered resonance neutrons. To measure a flux of resonance neutrons with an energy exceeding that of neutrons activating the detector, the device incorporates a scatterer from a light element (beryllium). Besides, to take the background of nonresonance neutrons into account, the device is provided with a replacable filter of a material capable of absorbing neutrons being measured as well as with an additional filter made of the material absorbing neutrons of an energy different from the resonance energy of the neuton flux to be measured. Preliminary tests have revealed that the divice is suitable for detecting cesium (5.0 eV) and tantalum (4.2 eV) neutrons
