Aspects of parton models of deep inelastic scattering

Description

A parton model is set up and results obtained, eg scaling and Callan-Gross relations. Sum rules are derived for polarized and unpolarized electromagnetic and for unpolarized weak deep inelastic scattering. A particle model in the target hadron rest frame is then compared with predictions of the usual infinite momentum frame formulation. Inclusion of confinement, the consequences for the net jet charge, and the effects on the parton model structure functions are examined. An attempt is made to explain the Melosh transformation in terms of relativistic kinematics. It is shown how confinement leads to a spin rotation which lowers the predicted value of the axial/vector coupling constant ratio from the SU6 value. Finally the Quantum chromodynamic predictions for deep inelastic scattering are compared with those of the subasymptotic parton model. (U.K.)
