Determination of PWR control rods reactivity worth using the analysis of the power signal during a rod drop

Description

The present work is related to the establishment of a validation file concerning a method for determining control rod efficiency. This method is based on the analysis of the power signal obtained during a rod drop in pressurized water reactor (PWR). The main purpose of our investigations was, in particular, to analyse the various conditions which would permit large scale application in PWRS, of the above method. Five different series of measurements were first interpreted to elucidate a theoretical model. This model, in turn, was used to establish the criteria for precision and good representation. As a result of our analysis, it may now be concluded that the power signal method can estimate the total control rod efficiency (normalized to the mean power) within 5%, provided that value of total β is known. This is achieved by taking as a representative signal, the weighted sum of 8 excore detectors and five suitabily placed in core detectors

Abstract (French)

Cette these se situait dans le cadre general de la mise en oeuvre d'un dossier de qualification de la methode de mesure de l'efficacite des absorbants de controle et d'arret, par analyse du signal de puissance, lors d'une chute de barres dans les Reacteurs a Eau sous pression (REP). Ce travail avait pour but d'analyser les conditions de mise en application sur les REP, de la methode. Le dossier de representativite et de precision a ete etabli a partir d'une modelisation theorique qui a permis d'interpreter les 5 campagnes de mesures effectuees durant cette these. A l'issue de ces travaux, nous pouvons considerer que la methode permet l'estimation de l'efficacite totale des barres rapportee a la Population Moyenne, avec une precision meilleure que 5% (en supposant parfaitement connue la valeur du β total). Cet objectif est atteint en utilisant comme signal representatif de la puissance moyenne, une somme ponderee des signaux des huit detecteurs neutroniques hors-coeur et des cinq detecteurs en coeur convenablement places
