Study of the mobility of plutonium and americium in marine sediments

  • 1. Argonne National Lab., IL

Description

A method is described for measuring the diffusion of transuranium elements in samples of sediment from various locations. The purpose of these measurements is the determination of effective diffusion coefficients of the radionuclides in the absence of interstitial flow through the sediment and at ambient temperature and pressure. The concentration profile of tracer amounts of radionuclides can be measured in cylindrical samples of sediment. Limiting values have been determined for plutonium and americium in both the tetravalent and hexavalent state
