A cool DA white dwarf with self-broadened lines

Description
Image dissector scanner data and spectroscopic data of the white dwarf BPM 4729 are presented and analysed. The metal abundance is deduced to be less than 10-4 of the solar value. The spectrum shows a steep Balmer decrement with only Hα and Hβ visible. This observation is in agreement with recent theoretical computations and suggests that hydrogen-rich white dwarfs with Tsub(e) =< 5000 K should show no Balmer lines. It is shown that the spectrum of BPM 4729 is unique among white dwarfs in that the visible Balmer lines are broadened by self-broadening. (author)
