Clustering aspects of polarized beam studies
Description
Recent analyses of experiments with low energy polarized 6Li and 7Li beams are reviewed. It is emphasized that elastic scattering polarization observables show a much stronger sensitivity to details of the projectile structure than do unpolarized cross-sections. The way that the measured vector and tensor analysing powers for Li scattering from a range of heavier targets can be understood in terms of simple cluster models for the ground and low lying excited states of the projectiles is described. In the Li elastic scattering data systematic deviations do exist which are difficult to understand in this way. The evidence for a novel type of spin-dependence in heavy-ion scattering is discussed. The quite different physics involved in the spin-dependence of light and heavy-ion interactions is emphasised. (Auth.)
