Development of oil shale mining and the state of land surface

  • 1. Institute of Ecology, Tallinn (Estonia)

Description

The territory of mines belongs to the suburban area, where the interest of privat initiative will evidently grow. It will be necessary to estimate the value and purposes of using these lands taking into account the impact of mining on abandoned areas. The experience of mining evolution points out the necessity to improve the mining technology and reduce the impact on the land surface. Both energetic resources - mineral from deposit and biological from usable lands need protection: first by mining with minimal losses, secondly by avoiding to decrease the forestry and agricultural production. During the development of mining the variance between the exertion of these resources emerged; the greater the losses in deposit, the better land surface conditions and contrariwise. Therefore, new ecological and economical solutions will be needed in mining technology and post-mining processes to find the compromise between the use of these resources. (au)
