2020 annual report of the research project with heavy ions at QST-HIMAC

One of the pillars of the heavy ion beam project research, which started in October 1994, is HIMAC Joint Research, which accepts research subjects and researchers from inside and outside the Institute for Quantum Sciences and Technology (QST). HIMAC was developed for medical use only. In order to reflect the research results in clinical trials, we reported the results of all research subjects in FY2020 and summarized them in a report book. In FY2020, 68 subjects, about half of the usual number, were conducted (the number of reports was 49 original papers, 6 proceedings, 123 oral presentations, and 16 others). Joint use research at HIMAC is important as a research base for heavy ion radiotherapy, as well as a research base for pioneering new fields of unprecedented high-energy heavy ion beams in the world. Joint use research issues are divided into: 1) Treatment/diagnosis group (analysis of results of heavy ion radiotherapy, research and development of treatment and diagnosis methods, etc.), 2) Biology group (research on irradiation targets such as cells and animals), 3) Physics and engineering group (other irradiation experiments). The 2020 research theme will be evaluated based on this report, and will be used in the FY2021 theme selection and machine time allocation. (S.S.)
