Spiral CT: An innovative technique of volumetric recording. Pt. 2

The present report gives a survey of initial experiences gained in 137 patients using the method of spiral volumetric measurement in conjunction with retrospective interpolation of sets of planar raw data. It provides sufficient information to substantiate its clinical useful in various regions of the body and describes the related advantages and drawbacks just as well as the prevailing specific conditions, in which this method has an indication. Its particular assets are the continuous display of organs displaced by respiratory movements, improved supero-inferior resolution, reliable detection of focal lesions in the very centre of pathological change and greater diagnostic usefulness of reconstructed images. Furthermore, a very high degree of accuracy can be achieved in contrast-enhanced visualisation of vessels or the liver at the time of maximum contrast-medium concentration. (orig.)
