Description

It has been shown recently that the intermetallic compound ZrCu exhibits shape memory effect (SME). This effect is associated with a martensitic transformation (MT) from a B2 type structure to two monoclinic martensitic structures. The defects within the individual plates of these two martensitic structures are also different. The overall behavior of ZrCu is thus similar to the B2 compounds of titanium, except for the differences in the hysteresis accompanying the transformation. Further studies on the transformation have been conducted and in this report the effects observed on adding nickel and titanium in different quantities to ZrCu are presented. Titanium and nickel were added to replace zirconium and copper respectively. Three groups of alloys (1) nickel alone added (2) titanium alone added and (3) both nickel and titanium added (ZrCu-NiTi quasi-binary cross-section) have been studied
