Cyclotron emission and beaming mechanisms in magnetized neutron stars
Description
The recently reported feature at 53 KeV in Her XI, if interpreted as cyclotron emission, imposes restrictions on the possible beaming mechanisms. Pencil beam schemes seem ruled out, while occultation schemes may work, but only in conjunction with a fan-beam scheme. Pure fan-beam schemes probably offer the most satisfactory and simple mechanism. (orig.)

Die vor kurzem berichtete Erscheinung einer 53 keV-Linie in Her XI bedeutet, wenn man sie als eine Zyklotronstrahlung deutet, Einschraenkungen der moeglichen Strahlerzeugungsmechanismen. Bleistiftfoermige Strahlen kommen wohl nicht in Frage; Okkulationsstrahlen sind zwar moeglich, aber nur zusammen mit einem Faecherstrahlmechanismus. Wahrscheinlich bieten reine Faecherstrahlmechanismen die befriedigendste und einfachste Erklaerung fuer diesen Vorgang. (orig.)Additional details
