The indications of electron therapy

  • 1. Orszagos Onkologiai Intezet, Budapest (Hungary)

Description

In the superficial layers of the skin electron radiation is less absorbed than gamma- or X-radiation, however, in the deeper regions electron radiation rapidly decreases. Thus homogeneous dose distribution can be achieved in the tumour tissue, and the radiation load of the tissues behind the tumour can be effectively reduced. On the basis of these advantages electron therapy is recommended in the following cases: extensive skin tumours (especially on the face, on the lips and on the head covered with hair), tumours of the nasal sinuses, postoperative treatment of mamma carcinomas (metastases in the lymph knots), neoplasms in the oral cavity and of the larynx.
