Oxidative chemisorption of iodine species on Pd(111)

Description

Surface spectroscopic techniques (Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Low Energy Electron Diffraction, Thermal Desorption Mass Spectroscopy) were used to study the type of adsorption of different iodine species on Pd(111). The compounds under study were HI(g), I2(g), and I-(aq). Exposure of the surface, to any of these three species, results in the formation of zerovalent iodine on Pd(111); oxidative chemisorption evidently occurs. The coverage was monitored as function of temperature, and it was found that an identical desorption process occurs for all three cases. Electrochemical data for each of the adsorbed species will be discussed in terms of the surface structures and compositions at a given pH and potential
