Pion interferometry at the CERN ISR
Description
This paper reports on interference effects of identical pions which have been studied by two collaborations at the ISR, the Axial Field Spectrometer Collaboration (AFS) and the Ames-Bologna-CERN-Dortmund-Heidelbery-Warsaw Collaboration (ABCDHW). The emphasis of this talk will be on a recent publication of the AFS-collaboration, but some of the earlier results are discussed. These interference effects are usually studied by means of the two-particle correlation function for identical particles. Elementary considerations, assuming independent emission of pions from a source with a limited extension in space-time, give the following relationship between the correlation function R(O) and ρ(O), the Fourier transform of the space-time pion source distribution
