Gamma densiometer for void fraction measurements in two-phase flows

Description
A gamma densitometer is used for measurements of void fraction in steady-state and transient two-phase flows. Americium-241 with an activity of 500 mCi is taken as radioactive source. Higher void fraction yields a smaller attenuation of the Gamma radiation passing through the two-phase flow mixture. The remaining Gamma radiation is registered by a scintillation detector system and transformed into a voltage signal proportional to the radiation intensity. Void fraction measurements in two-phase flows of refrigerant R12 in a vertical tube demonstrate good time resolution of the system for different flow patterns. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Zur Bestimmung des Dampfgehaltes stationaerer und instationaerer Zweiphasenstroemungen wird ein Gamma-Strahl-Dichtemesssystem eingesetzt. Als radioaktive Quelle wird Americium-241 mit einer Aktivitaet von 500 mCi verwendet. Die Gamma-Strahlung wird beim Durchgang durch das Zweiphasengemisch um so weniger geschwaecht, je groesser der Dampfgehalt ist. Die verbleibende Reststrahlung wird in einem Szintillationsdetektorsystem registriert und in ein intensitaetsproportionales Spannungssignal gewandelt. Messungen des Dampfgehaltes bei der Zweiphasenstroemung des Kaeltemittels R12 im senkrechten Rohr zeigen die gute Zeitaufloesung des Systems bei verschiedenen Stroemungsformen.
