Hemanyiopericytoma and meningiomas: MRI characteristics and differential diagnosis

Objective: To investigate the MR imaging features of hemanyiopericytoma (HPC) and to compare the features with the imaging findings of meningioma. Method: The clinical and imaging data of 6 patients with intracranial hemanyiopericytoma (age 26 to 75 years, mean age 46.33 ± 16.88 years) and 40 patients of intracranial meningioma (age 27 to 78 years, mean age 56.12 ± 12.19 years) were retrospectively analyzed during 2015 to 2017 in the First Hospital of China Medical University. All patients underwent MRI scans and imaging findings of the two groups were compared using Chi-square test. Result: The similar presences of tumor lobulation, cystic necrosis in the tumor, flowing void effect, narrow connection with the dura mater, and bone destruction on conventional MRI in the HPC group were more often than in the meningioma group (P < 0.05). However, the presence of dural tail sign in the meningioma group was more often than in the HPC group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The differences in MRI appearance between HPC and meningioma could help the differential diagnosis of the two entities. (authors)
