Natural radioactivity measurements of rock samples in Gulbarga, Karnataka

  • 1. Department of Physics, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga (India)
  • 2. Radiation Safety Systems Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Full text: The present work deals with the concentration of the natural radionuclides namely 238U, 232Th and 40K in different rock samples around Gulbarga City, known for the stone mine production. The radioactivity of each samples have been analyzed using a high resolution gamma ray spectrometry system, expressed in Bq/kg and the mean values are 13.72, 7.60, 203.13 for 238U, 232Th and 40K respectively. The mean dose rate is 19.62 nGyh-l at 1.0 meter above the ground level. These results indicate that the radioactivity in the samples is below the normal limit set by the national standards
