Hypoxic radiotherapy of patients with laryngeal carcinoma, involving excessive single and total doses of a radical course of radiotherapy
- 1. Akademiya Meditsinskikh Nauk SSSR, Obninsk (Russian Federation). Nauchno-Issledovatel'skij Inst. Meditsinskoj Radiologii
Description
A total of 153 patients with laryngeal carcinoma were followed up. Ninety-nine of them were administered radiotherapy without gaseous hypoxis mixture, the rest inhaled a mixture with 10 % of oxygen and 90 % of nitrogen 4-5 min before the irradiation and over its course, this being associated with a 10-15 % increase of the single and total doses of irradiation. The immediate results and severity of radiation reactions were virtually the same in both the groups. A two-year survival without recurrences was higher in the second group and the three-year survival increased by 13 % in these patients. Therefore, hypoxiradiotherapy is prederable for the treatment of this patient population
