The fast reactor: perspective and prospects

Creators

  • 1. UKAEA Headquarters, London

Description

The current energy outlook and comparative energy costs for the UK are discussed. Fast reactors will not be commercially introduced to the UK until they can generate electricity at prices which are roughly comparable to those of the thermal nuclear alternatives. Commercial fast reactors and their timescale are discussed with respect to present UK fast reactor policy and national and international collaboration. The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority's programme including progress to date, outstanding problems, and the forward programme and its objectives is described. It is concluded that the remaining technical difficulties will be overcome and that national and international collaboration will enable the UK to tackle successfully the development of the fast reactor to commercial introduction.
