Sustained cardiac 123I phenylpentadecanoic acid uptake after reversible coronary occlusion: A potential marker of myocardial salvage

Description
Regional IPPA uptake was studied in a coronary occlusion/reperfusion Langendorff perfused swine heart model during well defined conditions of substrate utilisation. FFA utilisation, reduced during ischemia, increased considerably and to a similar extent than that of glucose at reperfusion. IPPA, injected during reperfusion, was retained in viable myocardium in relation to rMBF. IPPA uptake and metabolic incorporation into myocardial lipids clearly discriminated control, reversible ischemic and irreversible damaged tissue. These findings suggest a potential role of IPPA-scintigraphy for early, noninvasive identification of reversible tissue injury in reperfused myocardium (orig.)
