Nuclear reactors
Description
Purpose: To provide a nuclear reactor with increased effective neutron multiplication factors. Constitution: In the present invention, UDn powders or UDn ceramics containing a great amount of deuterium are used as fuels. In such fuels, when neutrons collide against the atomic nuclei of U235 in UDn, nuclear fission products and 2.5n number of neutrons are generated. Meanwhile, recoil particles of the nuclear fission products having energy at 160 - 170 MeV collide against D chemically bonded with U to generate a great amount of D at about 100 KeV. These deuteriums cause D-D reaction (D2 + D2 → T3 + n) to generate a great amount of neutrons. The neutrons are moderated and collide against the atomic nuclei of U235 in UDn to further accelerate nuclear fission. In this way, fuels using UDn can increase the effective neutron multiplication factors more than UO2 fuels. (Kamimura, M.)
