Effect of EDTA and agar-agar on the behavior of 144Ce and 60Co in sodium chloride solutions
Description
In recent years, research workers have become interested in the interaction of radionuclides with dissolved organic substances (DOS) in seawater. However, the results obtained by different authors for a single radionuclide even when studied by the same method, do not coincide. Thus, the isolation of 60Co from seawater by coprecipitation showed that a significant fraction of the radionuclide was in the form of organic compounds. On the other hand, a test as to whether a direct interaction with EDTA was possible in principle gave negative results. The accumulation of 144Ce in marine plants and sediments decreases in presence of EDTA. The fact that 144Ce participated in complex formation was established by a filtration method. In the present work the interction of radionuclides with EDTA and agar agar as model DOSs has been studied
