Description

The elastic constants of YbPO4 have been determined in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K by using Brillouin scattering techniques. An approximate 20% softening of the 1/2(C11-C12) elastic constant was observed, and this anomaly suggests that a Jahn-Teller-type coupling occurs between the low-lying electronic states of the Yb3+ ions and the B1g lattice strain mode even though a cooperative structural phase transition does not take place. copyright 1996 The American Physical Society
