Description

Various methods are presently in use to determine the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) present in soil samples analyzed in association with contaminated site assessments and remedial action programs. The test methods used to determine TPH have a significant influence on the data obtained. Very seldom is the methodology for determining TPH specified. This paper reviews the technical procedures commonly in use to determine TPH using infrared and gas chromatography techniques. It discusses the similarities and differences in the specified analytical methods. Subtle differences employed by individual commercial laboratories to address unspecified procedural needs are also reviewed
