Methods for calculating burn-up of absorbers in intermediate reactors

Description

This paper describes techniques of calculating the burn-up of absorbers used to compensate excess reactivity in intermediate reactors. The equations arrived at here require, in general, a numerical solution; but for certain simplifying assumptions, problems can be solved analytically. The paper likewise arrives at approximate formulae which are useful in certain particular cases. When the absorber is distributed homogeneously (i.e. when the self-shielding factor approaches unity) a solution is obtained which accounts for the neutron spectrum change in the reactor during its rim (in the case of a reflectorless reactor). The paper suggests criteria for homogeneous absorber distribution which make it possible to select the optimum properties of the absorber. (author)

Abstract (French)

Les auteurs decrivent les methodes de calcul du taux de consommation des absorbants utilises pour compenser la reactivite en exces dans les reacteurs a neutrons intermediaires. Les equations auxquelles on parvient dans ce cas exigent en general une solution par une methode numerique; mais en faisant certaines hypotheses simplificatrices, on peut resoudre analytiquement les problemes. Les auteurs etablissent egalement des formules approchees, utiles dans certains cas particuliers. Lorsque l'absorbant est reparti de facon homogene (c'est-a-dire quand le facteur d'autoprotection approche de l'unite), on obtient une solution qui tient compte des changements du spectre neutronique au moment ou le reacteur fonctionne (pour un reacteur sans reflecteur). Les auteurs proposent, pour parvenir a une repartition homogene des absorbants, certains criteres qui permettent de choisir les proprietes optima de l'absorbant. (author)

Abstract (Spanish)

Los autores describen un conjunto de metodos para calcular el grado de combustion de los elementos absorbentes que se utilizan para compensar el exceso de reactividad en los reactores de neutrones intermedios. En el caso general, las ecuaciones obtenidas exigen una solucion numerica. Partiendo de ciertas suposiciones que simplifican el problema este puede resolverse tambien analiticamente . Los autores deducen asimismo ciertas formulas aproximadas que pueden aplicarse en casos particulares. Cuando la distribucion del absorbente es homogenea (o sea, cuando el factor de autoblindaje es proximo a la unidad), se obtiene una solucion que tiene en cuenta la modificacion del espectro neutronieo en el reactor durante el ciclo de funcionamiento (para un reactor desprovisto de reflector). Asimismo, se indican criterios que permiten elegir las caracteristicas optimas del absorbente cuando su distribucion es heterogenea. (author)

V doklade izlozhena metodika rascheta vygoraniya poglotitelej, primenyayushchikhs ya dlya kompensatsii izbytochnoj reaktivnosti v reaktorakh na promezhutochnykh nejtronakh. Poluchennye uravneniya trebuyut v obshchem sluchae chislennogo resheniya. Pri nekotorykh uproshchayushchikh predpolozheniya kh zadacha reshena analiticheski. V doklade polucheny takzhe priblizhennye formuly, poleznye v nekotorykh chastnykh sluchayakh. V sluchae, kogda poglotitel' razmeshchen gomogenno (t.e. faktor samoehkranirovani ya blizok k edinitse), polucheno reshenie, uchityvayushchee izmenenie spektra nejtronov v reaktore v techenie kampanii (dlya reaktora bez otrazhatelya). Dlya geterogennogo razmeshcheniya poglotitelya privodyatsya kriterii, pozvolyayushchie vybrat' optimal'nye kharakteristiki poglotitelya. (author)
