Metamict states of ThSiO4 dimorphs, huttonite and thorite
Description
It has been suggested that only tetragonal ThSiO4 thorite exists in a metamict form while monoclinic ThSiO4 huttonite does not exist in a metamict condition. Heavy ion bombardment studies show both forms to become non-crystalline with metamict damage cross-sections, Dsub(M), of (thorite) 0.54 +- 0.09 nm2 and Dsub(M) (huttonite) 0.27 +- 0.04 nm2 for Ar+ ions at 3 Mev. Experimental details are given. The results of x-ray diffraction measurements are presented and discussed. (U.K.)
