Description
The availability of the last generation of heavy ion accelerators and their sophisticated equipments opens new ways to produce and study Radioactive Nuclear Beams. Among these, secondary beams of nuclei in metastable states can be produced. Such isomeric beams are of great interest in order to investigate the nuclear structure of nuclei in an excited state. A method based on transfer reactions to produce isomeric heavy ion beams will be presented. The selectivity of transfer reactions leads to extremely pure isomeric beams. A 42Scm isomeric beam was produced for the first time of GANIL in 1993. The results obtained with the same isomeric beam produced by fragmentation at GANIL (Caen) and by transfer at SARA (Grenoble) are also presented. (authors). 15 refs., 6 figs., 1 tab
