High spin physics with GAMMASPHERE

  • 1. Lawrence Berkeley National Lab., Berkeley (United States). Nuclear Science Div.

Description

Recent results obtained with GAMMASPHERE, presently the most powerful γ-ray detector array worldwide, are discussed. For the first time, discrete links between a superdeformed band and the yrast states in the mass-190 region have been found. Previous hints of even larger deformation, hyper deformation in rare-earth nuclei could not be confirmed. The possibility of precision lifetime measurements gives new insights in the properties of superdeformed nuclei. Finally, studies of neutron-rich nuclei using deep-inelastic reactions are starting.
