Cosmic gamma-ray bursts
Description
The recent discovery by the Vela satellite system of short, extremely intense, bursts of gamma rays originating outside the solar system and the subsequent confirmation by a number of other independent observers is described. The known properties of these so-called gamma-ray bursts are given together with outlines of some of the more promising explanations produced so far. Essentially all these explanations invoke compact stellar objects- that is, dwarf stars, neutron stars or black holes. (Auth.)
