Analysis of modulation methods for continuous-action neutron generators

Description

Modulation methods applied in cases when the modulating signal is put either to the ion source, or to the extending electrodes of the ion source were analyzed with a view to optimizing the continuous-action neutron generator operation. It was Shown that in order to improve tube control it was necessary to increase the number of control electrodes and the cutoff voltage thereon, to decrease the difference between the diameter and length of the ion propagation channel, and to increase the distance to the accelerating electrodes and their total number. A study of the modulation method in an accelerating tube with a HF ion source has shown the pulse duration and pulse repetition rate to be dependent on the times of gas ionization and deionization in the source. The conclusions are made that the efficiency of modulation in neutron generators depends on the choice of the modulation method and the HF source parameters
