Bodyplethysmography is a Valuable Method to Test Obstructive Disturbances of Ventilation. The Analysis of Bodyplethysmographic Curves Helps to Determine the Bronchial Resistance and to Differentiate upper Airway Stenoses. Examples show the characteristic curves of extra- or intrathoracic, variable or fixed stenoses of the trachea. 71 patients with palpable goiter and dyspnoe have been examined by body-plethysmography and by X-ray to find out stenoses of the trachea, caused by malacia. The X-ray findings of a significant deviation of the tracheal diameter are followed by characteristic disturbances in pulmonary function test in only 30% of the patients. Only pulmonary function studies as a physiological method of testing can select and determine the functional relevant cases of stenoses of the trachea, caused by malacia. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Die Bodyplethysmographie ist eine wertvolle Methode zur Objektivierung obstruktiver Ventilationsstoerungen. Ueber die Bestimmung des bronchialen Stroemungswiderstandes hinaus dient die Analyse der Druckstroemungskurven zur Differenzierung hochsitzender Atemwegsstenosen. Anhand von Beispielen werden die charakteristischen Kurvenbilder von extra- oder intrathorakal gelegenen, variablen oder fixierten Trachealstenosen erlaeutert. 71 Patienten mit tastbarer Struma und Atemnot werden bodyplethysmographisch und roentgenologisch auf das Vorliegen einer malaziebedingten Trachealeinengung untersucht. Der Roentgenbefund einer signifikanten Tracheallumenschwankung wird nur in 30% der Faelle durch charakteristische Parameter einer Ventilationsbehinderung lungenfunktionsanalytisch bestaetigt. Nur die Lungenfunktionsanalyse ist als physiologische Messmethode geeignet, die funktionell relevanten Befunde einer malaziebedingten Trachealbeeintraechtigung zu selektieren und quantitativ einzustufen.
