Ultrasonic sweep arm for sodium cooled reactors
Description
This report describes experience in the use of a new type of monitoring and testing device to be applied in conjunction with components under sodium. In the method outlined, ultrasonic pulses are used which are emitted into the sodium plenum of fast breeder reactors by newly developed high temperature transducers. The basic work was conducted under out-of-pile conditions in a sodium tank of the sodium tank facility of the Karlsruhe Institute for Reactor Development. The sensor development, which preceded this phase, resulted in the use of soldered lithium niobate crystals whose operating characteristics were improved by the preliminary treatment outlined in the report. Special materials and techniques suitable for sensor fabrication are proposed. An alternative to soldering is suggested for contacting the crystals with their diaphragms, i.e. a contact pressure concept for the range of application up to 2 MHz. (orig.)

Im vorliegenden Bericht wird ueber die Erfahrungen mit einer neuartigen Ueberwachungs- und Pruefeinrichtung zur Detektion von Komponenten unter Natrium berichtet. Das beschriebene Verfahren benuetzt Ultraschall-Impulse, die mit Hilfe neu entwickelter Hochtemperaturschallgeber in das Natriumplenum Schneller Brutreaktoren emittiert werden. Die Basisarbeiten hierzu wurden out-of-pile in einem Natriumtank der Natriumbehaelter-Anlage des Instituts fuer Reaktorentwicklung in Karlsruhe durchgefuehrt. Die hierzu vorausgegangene Sensor-Entwicklung fuehrte zum Einsatz geloeteter Lithium-Niobat-Piezokristalle, deren Betriebseigenschaften durch die angegebene Vorbehandlung verbessert werden konnten. Spezielle, fuer die Herstellung der Sensoren geeignete Werkstoffe und Technologien werden vorgeschlagen. Als Alternative fuer die Kontaktierung der Kristalle mit ihrem Diaphragma wird eine Anpressmethode fuer den Einsatzbereich bis 2 MHz dem Loetverfahren gegenuebergestellt. (orig.)
