Flow rate determination using computed tomography

Description
A method of measuring flow in a large vessel by using a CT scanner is described. It has been shown that this is a simple, accurate and reproducible method in an experimental model. Possible clinical applications and limitations of this method of measuring flow are briefly considered. The method involves the injection at a known rate of an iodine contrast medium of known concentration into the vessel. By measuring the resultant concentration at a point downstream using the CT scanner, the flow rate in the vessel may be calculated. Results of flow measurements in an experimental model are presented. These results suggest that accurate determinations of blood flow in large vessels such as the aorta may be possible with CT.
