MR investigation of recurrent cholesteatomas

Description
Nine cases of recurrent petrous cholesteatomas have been studied by a 1.5 T MR unit. Gadolinium was injected in 1 case. In all cases, comparison between MR, CT and clinical findings were made. MR allows for accurate topographic study and assessment of cholesteatomas extension, in particular in the posterior fossa and skull base. Relationships with the internal carotid artery and the jugular vein are clearly depicted
Abstract (French)
Neuf patients presentant des cholesteatomes recidivants ont ete etudies avec un appareil de resonance magnetique de 1,5 Tesla. Chez un patient, le Gadolinium DTPA a ete utilise. Dans tous les cas, une confrontation a ete faite avec la tomodensitometrie et les signes cliniques. L'IRM permet une etude remarquablement precise de la topographie et de l'extension des differents cholesteatomes. Dans les cholesteatomes etendus en particulier, l'IRM parait etre actuellement la meilleure methode diagnostique pour le bilan de l'extension notamment aux vaisseaux (carotides interne et jugulaire), a la fosse posterieure et a la base du crane.
