Use of intravenous Gd-DTPA in multiple sclerosis

Description

The aim of this study was to determine the value of intravenous Gd-DTPA in diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) and to compare the results with CT results in 18 cases. Baseline MR images were obtained with spin-echo sequences (TR/TE, msec) of 544/44, 1,500/44, 1,500/80, and an inversion-recovery sequence of 1,500/500/44. After administration of Gd-DTPA (Schering AG) in a dose of 0.08 mmol/kg, these sequences were repeated; 45 minutes later a further dose of 0.012 mmol/kg Gd-DTPA was administered and the sequences were again repeated. Enhancement was seen on CT in five cases and on MR imaging in six cases. No new lesions were identified on Gd-DTPA MR imaging, although this agent was useful in identifying ''active'' lesions
