Measurement of the diffractive cross section in low Q2 ep scattering at HERA

Description

The cross section of the diffractive process, γ* + p → X + N, has been measured in the mass range, 3 < MX < 12.2 GeV and MN < 6 GeV, for the low Q2 region, 0.220 < Q2 < 0.700 GeV2, and the γ*p center-of-mass energy, 90 < W < 220 GeV using the ZEUS detector. The Pomeron trajectory, αIP(t) at t=0, is obtained from the W dependence of the cross section, dσγ*pdiff / dMX, using the Regge formalism. The extracted value, αIP(0)=1.217 ± 0.026(stat) -0.088+0.042(syst), is significantly higher than that expected from soft Pomeron. (author)
