Development of micro-controller based data acquisition system for industrial column scanning applications

  • 1. Isotope Applications Division, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

Isotope Applications Division has carried out many NDT investigations for the various industries in India. In Gamma Scanning (Column Scanning) radioactive source and detector placed diagonally opposite to measure level and density differences in distillation columns and other process equipment. Malfunctioning of these columns, results in huge revenue loss and can produce fire hazards and environmental pollution. Gamma scan gives process engineers a tool to see inside a column during its operation and better understand columns on-line performance. Scans generate density profiles of distillation columns that are used to identify damaged trays and packing, liquid maldistribution, rate-related problems such as weeping or entrainment, and process problems such as fouling and foaming. The results of Gamma Scanning mainly depend on the accuracy of measurements that depends on the error free method of data collection and the instruments accuracy and reliability. The paper discuss about the indigenously designed and developed customize instrument for the data acquisition based on gamma measurements with advanced technology. (author)
