Application of molybdenum-99 to nuclear medicine and its production

Description
Mo-99 is produced in large quantity as the parent nuclide of Tc-99m recently used most in the field of nuclear medicine. It is administered into human bodies in the form of radioactive medicines combined with various compounds, and utilized for nuclear-medical diagnosis such as cancer. The pervasion of Tc-99m is mostly owing to its excellent nuclear and chemical characteristics, the development of the generators to effectively utilize it and the advance of the equipment for diagnosis such as scintillation cameras. For the mass production of Mo-99, the neutron capture reaction of Mo in nuclear reactors or the nuclear fission of U-235 are utilized. In the former, the manufacturing process is simple, but it is hard to obtain the product with high specific radioactivity. In the latter, Mo-99 must be separated with high purity from the fission products of many kinds and large quantity, therefore, the manufacturing process is very complex. However, the specific radioactivity of the product is very high. These are used separately according to the object of diagnosis. In this paper, the present status of the manufacture and utilization of Mo-99 is explained, centering around the state of development of its manufacturing techniques in Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. 99Moは、近年核医学の分野で最も多く用いられている99mTcの親核種として大量に製造されている。99mTcは、いろいろな化合物に結合した、いわゆる放射性医薬の形で人体に投与し、がんなどの核医学的診断に利用される。99mTcの普及には、その核的および化学的特性が優れていること、それを有効に利用するためのゼネレータの開発、さらにシンチカメラ等の診断用機器の発達に負うところが大きい。99Moの大量製造には、原子炉内でのMoの中性子捕獲反応または235Uの核分裂を利用する。前者は、製造工程は単純であるが、高い比放射能の製品が得難い。後者は、多種類かつ大量の核分裂生成物から99Moを高い純度で分離しなければならないので、製造工程が非常に複雑になる。しかし比放射能は非常に高い。これらは診断の対象により使い分けられている。本稿では、日本原子力研究所における99Moの製造技術の開発状況を中心に、その利用と製造の現状を解説する。 (著者)Additional details
