Nuclear demagnetisation experiments with the aid of precooling by PrCu6

  • 1. Rijksuniversiteit Leiden (Netherlands). Kamerlingh Onnes Lab.

Description

So far, the precooling of a nuclear demagnetization stage has been mostly performed by electronic demagnetization stages or by 3He-4He dilution refrigerators. Both systems have the disadvantage that the heat contact between nuclear and precooling stages is governed by the Kapitza resistance, which means that precooling temperature below 15 mK can only be reached after several days of cooling. A disadvantage of In for reaching extremely low temperature is its large quadrupole moments, although starting at temperature of 10 mK in a field of 6 T, temperature of 0.4 mK can be obtained. In the experiments by the authors, 2 or 8 moles of In were used as the nuclear stage. For the Korringa constant of Cu and Pt, values of 1.27 +- 0.01 sK and 29.5 +- 0.5 msK were found respectively, which are in good agreement with the values found by other researchers. This shows that the thermometry is mutually consistent. The results of experiments showed that a nuclear enhanced system is a fast and powerful refrigerator for precooling a nuclear demagnetization stage below 10 mK, and that In is a good nuclear refrigerant with large specific heat at temperature below 1 mK.
