Ultrasound and computed tomography in topic diagnostics of tumors of the lateral neck

Description

14 patients with tumors of the lateral neck had ultrasound and computed tomography to determine the size of the tumor. These were 13 patients with neck metastases of malignant tumors of different primary sites and 1 patient with a cylindroma of the submandibular gland. Ultra-sound and computed tomography could show the dimension of the tumor, infiltration of skin and deep neck muscles and the relation between the tumor and the great neck vessels. In 6 patients a comparison between intraoperative findings and the results of ultra-sound and computed tomography could be performed. In all cases the operation sustained the results of ultrasound and CT. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

14 Patienten mit ausgedehnten Tumoren des lateralen Halses wurden zur Ausdehnungsbestimmung der Neoplasie sonographisch und computertomographisch untersucht. Bei 4 Patienten bestand eine Halsmetastase bei unbekanntem Primaertumor bzw. ein ausgedehntes branchiogenes Carcinom, bei 8 Patienten ein histologisch gesichertes Carcinom der Mundhoehle, Hypopharynx und Larynx mit ausgedehnter Metastasierung in die Halsweichteile. Eine Patientin wies ein adenoid-cystisches Carcinom der Glandula submandibularis auf, ein weiterer ein Epipharynxcarcinom mit Halsmetastase. Durch Ultraschall und Computertomogramm liess sich eine Ausdehnungsbestimmung der Halstumoren durchfuehren. Infiltration in die Haut und tiefe Halsmuskulatur waren erkennbar. Eine Veraenderung der grossen Halsgefaesse liess sich ebenso nachweisen wie ihre teilweise Ummauerung durch Tumorgewebe. Bei 6 Patienten konnten die intraoperativen Befunde mit den Ergebnissen des US und CT verglichen werden. Es bestand eine Uebereinstimmung mit den Aussagen des Ultraschalls und Computertomogramms.
