Study of Ag+/PAA (polyacrylic acid) and Ag0/PAA aqueous system at equilibrium

Description

When submitted to gamma radiation the system Ag+-PAA-water leads to clusters Ag0n/PAA (3 < n < 8) the UV spectrum of which at λ < 380 nm is accompanied by a visible band depending on the PAA ligand (λ > 420 nm) interacting with the clusters. Potentiometric measurements carried out on Ag+ solutions in the presence of PAA at various pH show that the deprotonated form (polyacrylate anion) is strongly bonded to Ag+, on the opposite of the protonated form of PAA. One of the oligomer clusters can be stabilized for more than one year. Studying it by infra-red spectrometry reveals important modifications in the vibration bands of the COO- group circa 1400 and 1600 cm-1 according to the bonding of PAA with Ag+ or Ag0

Abstract (French)

Le systeme Ag+-APA en milieu aqueux donne naissance sous irradiation gamma a des clusters Ag0n/APA (3 < n < 8) dont le spectre d'absorption UV (λ < 380 nm) est accompagne d'une bande visible caracteristique du ligand APA (λ > 420 nm) en interaction avec les clusters. Une etude potentiometrique menee sur des solutions de Ag+ en presence d'APA a differents pH montre que la forme deprotonee (polyacrylate) est fortement liee a Ag+, ce qui n'est pas le cas de la forme protonee de APA. L'un des clusters oligomeres peut etre stabilise au moins un an. Son etude par spectrometrie infra-rouge revele des variations importantes dans les bandes de vibration du groupe COO- vers 1400 et 1600 cm-1 selon que le polyacrylate est lie a Ag+ ou a Ag0
