Pulmonary sequestration - incidental finding in pulmonary carcinoma evaluation

The author presents a case of a broncho pulmonary sequestration with a typical localization as an incidental finding in a patient who was referred for CT evaluation of a neoplastic lesion in the 3-rd pulmonary segment on the left, without being a focus of this article. The association of a broncho pulmonary sequestration with a neoplastic process is extremely rare with only 6 cases described in the literature so far according to Taku Okamoto et al. The sequester is associated with the systemic blood flow through branches of the thoracic aorta while the venous outflow is performed by the pulmonary veins. The anomalous tissue does not take part in the respiratory pulmonary function and is not separated by a pleural sac which makes it easy for different pathogenic microorganisms to cause repetitive respiratory infections.
