Investigation of fluoro-acidity in molten salts

This thesis deals with the study of one physico-chemical property of molten fluorides media, fluoro-acidity (pF which is equivalent to the pH for aprotic solvent), and its impact on the process. The fluoro-acidity (pF = -log(aF-)) of molten fluorides is presently unknown and the purpose of this work is to build a relative scale of fluoro-acidity. This study was conducted in the first part using two approaches: - a kinetic study of stability of B(III) and Si(IV) ions, where the reaction leading to gaseous species (BF3(g) and SiF4(g)) is affected by the fluoro-acidity. By comparing the rate constants of gas release, the different media were sorted and a relative scale of fluoro-acidity was proposed. - the influence of fluoro-acidity on the transport in solution, determined by measuring the diffusion coefficient and by calculating the non-dimensional Schmidt number (Sc=ν/D) was investigated. Relationships between bridged fluorines, viscosity and fluoro-acidity was evidenced, and the proposed fluoro-acidity scale validated. Then, a stable reference electrode in molten fluorides was developed. Electromotive forces measurements of concentration cells were performed and the fluoro-acidity impact on the potential of a redox couple was demonstrated. Thanks to this reference electrode, free F activities ratios in different solvents were determined. (author)

Cette these concerne l'etude d'une des principales proprietes physico-chimiques des milieux de fluorures fondus, la fluoroacidite (notee pF et equivalente au pH en solvant aprotique), et son impact sur le procede. La valeur de la fluoroacidite (pF = -log(aF-)) de chacun des melanges de fluorures fondus n'est actuellement pas connue. L'objet de ces travaux est de construire une echelle relative de fluoroacidite. Cette etude a ete menee dans une premiere partie au travers de deux approches: - une etude cinetique de la stabilite des ions B(III) et Si(IV) dont la reaction conduisant aux especes gazeuses BF3(g) et SiF4(g) est influencee par la fluoroacidite. La comparaison des constantes de vitesse de degagement gazeux a permis de classer les differents milieux et d'etablir une echelle de fluoroacidite relative. - l'influence de la fluoroacidite sur le transport en solution a ete determinee par la mesure du coefficient de diffusion et du nombre adimensionnel de Schmidt (Sc=ν/D). La dependance entre fluors pontants, viscosite et fluoroacidite a ete montree, et le classement precedent a ete valide. Dans une seconde partie, une electrode de reference stable en fluorures fondus a ete mise au point. Elle a permis de realiser des mesures de forces electromotrices de piles de concentration et d'etudier l'impact de la fluoroacidite sur le potentiel d'un couple electrochimique. Cette electrode a notamment permis de determiner des rapports d'activites de F- libres dans differents solvants. (auteur)
