Diagnosis by computed tomography of space-occupying lesions in the region of the base of the skull

119 CT findings of examinations of the base of the skull conducted over a period of 52 months in 63 patients, were checked for their informative value. The CT findings were compared with clinical signs and symptoms and - if available - with findings from operations, biopsies and/or postmortem examinations (55 of 63 patients). For 42 CT findings, a total of 88 comparable findings obtained via conventional X-ray methods were available. This comparison showed a 66% superiority of CT over conventional radiography. The results point to a considerable superiority of CT both in the imaging of structures and in the detection of bony changes in the region of the base of the skull. (orig.)

119 CT-Befunde von Untersuchungen der Schaedelbasis bei 63 Patienten aus einem Zeitraum von 52 Monaten wurden auf ihren Informationsgehalt ueberprueft. Zur Objektivierung der CT-Befunde wurden diese mit klinischen Symptomen und, soweit verfuegbar, mit Operations-, Biopsie- und/oder Sektionsbefunden verglichen (55 von 63 Patienten). Bei 42 CT-Befunden lagen insgesamt 88 vergleichbare Befunde konventioneller Roentgenverfahren vor, die mit den Befunden der CT verglichen werden konnten. Dieser Vergleich ergab eine Ueberlegenheit der CT gegenueber Roentgenuebersichtsaufnahmen von 66,6%. Beim Vergleich mit der konventionellen Tomographie kam die CT in 52% der Faelle zu besseren Ergebnissen. Die ermittelten Ergebnisse sprechen fuer eine grosse Ueberlegenheit der Computertomographie sowohl in der Darstellung von weichteildichten Strukturen wie auch in der Erfassung knoecherner Veraenderungen im Schaedelbasisbereich.
