Description
This paper provides simplified guidelines for the design and evaluation of the boundaries between seismic and nonseismic category II piping located above seismic category I piping (II/I). The recommended guidelines were developed based on earthquake experience and recent dynamic testing of piping. Guidelines are provided for application in four areas of seismic piping design. These guidelines make use of the knowledge and experience on the seismic ruggedness of piping and support systems gained through recent investigations on the seismic response of industrial and power facilities, extensive dynamic testing of piping components and piping/support systems, and several detailed analytical investigations completed to more accurately calculate seismic responses. The intent of these guidelines is to develop simplified design approaches that will concentrate resources on areas that have been demonstrated effective in developing seismically safe piping designs
